THE CASTLE.
It was a cold December afternoon.
Walter Burge was outside his cottage.
when he saw the car in the road, across the fields.
It was Minnie Dawe's car.
"Who's she taking home?" thought Walter.
"a visitor?"
*Walter didn't like visitors."Stay away from the castle,"
he told them when they came in the summer.Sometimes
they didn't listen to him.But this was winter;
when many people didn't come.
He watched the car for a minute or two;then he went back to his work.
An orange cat was outside the cottage. It was the colour of fire.
It too watched the car. Then it walked slowly across the field
at the back of the cottage; and up to *Genny Castle.
*Claire looked out of the window of the little car.
"Is it far to your cottage,Aunt *Min?" she asked.
"about six miles," said her aunt.
The village of Little *Genny was behind them now;
and the snow began to fall from grey December sky.
*Claire thought about Christmas."It's going to be nice here with Aunt *Min,"
She thought.
"The last time I saw you was ten years ago," said Aunt *Min.
"I was only five years old then," said *Claire with a laugh.
"And now you're as tall as me," said Aunt *Min.She was tall
and thin with grey hair."Where did your mother and father go?
I can't remember.""New Zealand," said *Claire.
"They went because of Dad's job,
and they are coming back in January."
Aunt *Min smiled."You are going to be with me in my cottage for Christmas,"she said.
*Claire smiled back, the she looked across the fields and saw a tall stone building.
"An old castle!" sha said."I must go and see that before I go home again."
Aunt *Min didn't look at the castle."It's not a nice place to visit," she said.
"*Genny Castle is dangerous."
"Dangerous?" said *Claire. "Why?"
Aunt *Min didn't answer. She looked across the field at the old building and said,
"Stones are always falling from the walls and towers."
*Claire looked at her aunt."There's something Aunt *Min isn't telling me," she thought.
"What is it?does the castle have a secret?"
When *Claire got up the next morning the sun was in the sky.
"Did you sleep well?" asked Aunt *Min.
THE MAGIC HAND.
This is a story from greece.
once there was a king.
his name was midas.
midas loved gold.
he did not want to buy things with his gold.
he wanted to look at the gold every day.
there was a house made of stone.
he put his gold in this house.
there were many boxes ın the house.
he put the gold in the boxes.
midas went to the stone house every day.
he opned every box and looked at the gold.
he took the gold up in his hands.
DICK AND HIS CAT.
Once there was a boy.
His name was *Dick.
He was very poor.
His father and mother had died.
He had no friends to help him.
One day he heard some men speaking.
One man said.
"I shall go to London".
London is a very big city.
and its streets are covered with gold.
Everyone in London is very rich.
Then Dick said "I shall go to London and become rich".
Some days after that.
*Dick saw a cart at the side of the road.
He said to the man on the cart.
"Where are you going".
The man said "I am going to London".
"Will you take me to London" asked Dick.
The man said "Yes".
So Dick got on the cart.
and he went to London.
When Dick came to London.
he saw .
The streets were not made of gold.
They were made of stones.
But there were many houses.
along the sides of the streets.
there were houses hundreds and hundreds.
Dick got down.
The man and the cart went away.
Dick stood in the street.
He had no house to go .
He had no food to eat.
He had no friends.
Then the snow began to fall.
The snow fell more quickly.
Soon there was snow over everything.
The streets and the houses were covered with snow.
Soon they were all white.
They looked beatiful.
Poor Dick was covered with snow.
Night was coming.
There was a light in the window of the house.
Dick went to it.
and he stood near the door.
Then he sat down on the stone.
Just then.
The door was opened .
and a servant looked out.
she saw *Dick sitting there.
"Go away".
"You good-for-nothing boy" she said.
"What are you doing there".
Dick was so tired .
He could not stand up.
The servant became angry.
She cried again.
Then,.
she got a pot of cold water.
and she threw it over Dick.
That was the house of a very rich man.
His name was Mr. Warren.
Mr. Warren had one child.
Her name was Alice.
Alice was standing near the door.
and she saw the servant-woman throw the water over Dick.
Alice was very angry.
"The poor boy will die".
"You bad woman".
Then she took Dick's hand.
"Come in,poor boy" she said.
and she brought him into the house.
She gave him food .
and she gave a bed to sleep.
and *Dick stayed in the house that night.
In the morning .
Mr. Warren saw *Dick.
and he said.
"You will stay in my house" .
"and You will help the cook".
"You will begin today".
So *Dick stayed and helped the cook.
The cook was a bad woman.
She was not kind to Dick.
She always gave bad food to eat.
She was always calling him bad names.
When she was angry.
She hit him on the face.
Dick had a little room at the top of the house.
It was a very little room.
and It was a very bad room.
It was always full of mice.
There were hundreds of mice.
The mices ate *Dick's food.
SO *Dick was not happy in the House.
But he did not say anything to Mr. Warren .
or Alice.
He loved Alice.
One day .
Dick saw a small boy in the street.
The boy had a cat in his arms.
Dick asked "Where are you taking the cat".
The boy said.
"I will throw the cat in the river".
and I will kill it.
*Dick loved the cats.
So he said.
"Do not kill her".
"Give her to me".
That night.
Dick took the cat to his room.
He had a little bread to eat.
He put it on the table.
Then a mouse came .
and it began to eat the bread.
The cat jumped and caught the mouse.
and she killed it.
She killed many mice.
all other mices ran away..
After that .
There were no mice in Dick's room.
*Alice saw that *Dick was unhappy.
and she knew .
The cook was unkind to him.
So she told her father..
Mr. warren said "the cook is not a nice woman".
She is fat and ugly.
and she looks unkind.
Dick is a nice boy.
He does his work nicely.
His face and hands are always nice .
and they are clean.
*Dick shall work for me.
Mr. warren worked in a big ugly house near river.
He had many ships.
He sent the ships far away .
to other countries.
the ships took things from england .
to other countries.
and they brought things from other countries.
to England.
There were men working for him in the big house.
There were men who worked on the ships.
Dick still lived in the little room.
and his cat was still with him.
One day .
Mr. Warren was sending a ship away.
to another country.
He asked all his servants.
"Have you anything ".
"I want to send on my ship".
They will sell it in far country.
and I will give you the money.
Then all servants brought things to put to the ship.
Then.
Mr. Warren asked *Dick.
But .
Poor *Dick had nothing to send.
Alice said .
"I will give dick something to send ".
But Mr. Warren said .
"No,".
"He must send something of his own".
Dick said "I have nothing ,".
"But I have only a cat".
"Why do not you send your cat?" asked *Alice.
"I love my cat" said *Dick.
"But I must send her".
*Dick brought his cat .
and he put her on the ship.
*Dick went back to his room.
He was very sad.
and he was alone now.
He slept alone in his room.
The cat had gone.
The mice were beginning to come back to the room.
and dick could not sleep .
because of mice.
The cook was still unkind to him.
and she did not give him nice food.
One night *Dick said.
"I can not stay here ".
"I will go away to some other country".
He put on his clothes .
and he went down.
He opened the door of the house.
and he went out alone into the street.
He walked along the street.
He walked all night.
The street led out into the country.
It became a small road.
There were no houses in the country.
There were only trees and fields.
When morning was near.
He sat down on a stone at the side of the road.
He could not go on.
as he sat there.
the sun came up into the sky.
as the sun came up .
The bells of London began to ring.
as they rang .
*Dick thought that they said.
"Come again".
"Come again".
"They are ringing to me" he thought.
They are calling me back to London.
They are saying "come back".
You will not always be poor and unhappy.
wait,.
and your day will come.
*Dick stood up.
"I will go back" he said.
He went back again to the city.
The ship went .
and it came to an unknown country.
The king of that country asked the men .
"show me all the things ".
So they went to the king's house.
They took beatiful things.
clothes,jevels,.
the rings,.
hats,shoes,axes,.
bags,,lamps.
The king looked at all the things.
and said "I don't want any of these things".
Bring me what I want.
Then I will fill your ship with gold.
Then the king told his servants to bring food.
They brought food .
They put it on the table.
before men.
When they put the food .
Hundreds of mice came out of holes .
The men didn't see many mice before.
The mices jumped on the table .
and they ate all the food .
before their eyes.
The king said "this is what I want".
I want something to kill these mices.
They ate the food before our eyes.
They run over the food.
before we can eat
They make holes in our clothes.
As soon as we get into the bed.
They run over our faces.
They bite the children.
We can not kill them.
They are so small.
They run away.
before we can catch them.
Give me something to kill the mice .
and then I will fill your ship with gold.
One of the men asked.
"Have you no cats in this country".
"What is a cat?" said the king.
Then the man ran quickly .
and he brought dick's cat.
as soon as the man came into the king's hall.
The cat jumped from his arms.
She killed a mouse with one foot.
and she caught another.
She killed so many mice .
the other mices ran away.
The king jumped up .
and he cried "good,good".
I never saw a cat before.
"Give me the cat ".
"and I fill your ship with gold".
"I never saw so beatiful a thing before".
So the King took *Dick's cat.
and he gave to the men much gold .
He filled their ship with gold.
The ship came back to London.
Mr. Warren went to the ship.
And he saw all the gold.
He said " What did you sell for so much gold".
The men said " The cat".
Then Mr-Warren sent for Dick..
He said "You have become very rich".
"You have more money than I have".
"Do you want to go away from us now".
Dick loved Alice ..
He said " no,I want to stay".
" and I want to work with you".
Mr. Warren said .
"You will not stay as my servant".
"You will stay as my friend".
So Dick stayed with Mr. Warren .
After some years.
He married *Alice.
He became very rich.
and he was a very good man.
He was the richest man in london.
and Alice was the happiest woman.
THE END
FOR LOVE OR MONEY.
*NEWTON OWNED A LITTLE SHOP IN A SMALL TOWN.
IT IS A TOWN CALLED *HILLFIELD.

FOR MANY YEARS.
ONE DAY.
A FRIEND CALLED *DICK CAME INTO THE SHOP .

THIS IS MY SHOP.
IT WAS MY FATHER'S SHOP.
IT WILL BE MY SON'S.
I WILL NOT SELL IT TO ANYONE.
"THAT'S RIGHT" HIS FRIEND SAID.
YOU MUST TELL HIM THAT.
HE WAS VERY TROUBLED.
SOME DAYS LATER.
*VICTOR GOT A LETTER.
HE READ IT.
AND HIS FACE BECAME VERY RED.
"WHAT IS THE MATTER " ASKED HIS WIFE.
YOU LOOK VERY ANGRY.
WHOM IS THAT LETTER FROM.
"IT'S FROM *ADAMS" SAID *VICTOR.
HE WANTS TO BUY OUR SHOP.
"BUT WHY" ASKED HIS WIFE.
YOU DON'T WANT TO SELL THE SHOP,DO YOU?.
WHY CAN HE CARE ABOUT A LITTLE SHOP LIKE OURS.
BECAUSE HE LIKES BUYING SMALL SHOPS .
AND MAKING THEM INTO BIG ONES.
*DICK KNOWS ALL ABOUT HIM.
HE TOLD ME.
"IT CAN'T MATTER TO US" SAID MRS. NEWTON.
THE SHOP IS OURS.
IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SELL IT.
HE CAN'T HAVE IT.
TELL HIM THAT.
HE CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.
"YES" SAID *VICTOR.
I'LL TELL HIM THAT.
DON'T SAY ANYTHING TO *TOM.
HE PUT THE LETTER IN HIS COAT.
AND HE WENT TO OPEN THE SHOP.
HE STARTED THE DAY'S WORK.
BUT HE WAS NOT THE HAPPIEST MAN IN THE COUNTRY.
ONE DAY.
ABOUT A WEEK LATER.
TOM WAS ON HIS WAY HOME IN HIS CAR.
HE SAW A CAR STANDING BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD.
A GIRL WAS STANDING BY IT.
SHE WAS LOOKING AT THE CAR.
*TOM STOPPED AND GOT OUT OF THE CAR.
"WHAT'S THE MATTER" HE SAID.
CAN I HELP YOU?.
THE GIRL LOOKED UP.
SHE WAS VERY PRETTY WITH GOLDEN HAIR AND BLUE EYES.
"I DON'T KNOW" SHE SAID.
"IT JUST STOPPED".
I CAN'T MAKE IT GO.
I DON'T KNOW VERY MUCH ABOUT CARS.
"LET ME LOOK" SAID *TOM.
"OH! THANK YOU" SAID THE GIRL.
"YOU'RE VERY KIND".
*TOM LOOKED INSIDE THE CAR.
AND HE FOUND THE TROUBLE.
HE STOOD UP.
"NO" HE SAID.
YOU CAN'T MAKE IT GO.
YOU HAVE TO LEAVE IT HERE.
THEY MUST TAKE THE CAR LATER.
"OH! DEAR" SAID THE GIRL.
"WHAT SHALL I DO".
I MUST GET HOME.
AND IT'S A LONG WAY TO WALK.
"I'LL TAKE YOU IN MY CAR" SAID *TOM.
WHAT IS YOUR NAME.
WHERE DO YOU LIVE.
"MY NAME IS *ADAMS" SAID THE GIRL.
"KAY ADAMS".
I LIVE AT *THE_MANOR_HOUSE AT *HILLFIELD.
"I KNOW THE SHOP" SAID *KAY.

"CARS" SAID *TOM.
"ANYTHING TO DO WITH CARS".
I WORK WITH CARS IN *MAIDSTONE.
MY FATHER WANTED ME TO WORK IN THE SHOP.
BUT I DIDN'T LIKE THE WORK.
BY THIS TIME.
THEY WERE ON THEIR WAY TO THE_MANOR_HOUSE.
I UNDERSTAND YOUR FATHER.
*TOM LOOKED AT HER AND LAUGHED.
"YOU HAVE TO MEET MY FATHER" HE SAID .
HE TALKS LIKE THAT.
THEY CAME TO *THE_MANOR_HOUSE.
AND *TOM STOPPED THE CAR.
"THANK YOU VERY MUCH" SAID *KAY.
AS SHE GOT OUT.
"WILL YOU COME IN".
"NO,NOT NOW,THANK YOU" SAID *TOM.
I MUST GET HOME.
BUT I WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN.
WILL YOU COME TO THE SHOP ONE DAY?.
YOU CAN SEE OUR HOUSE, TOO.
IT'S OVER THE SHOP.
"THANK YOU" SAID *KAY.
THAT WILL BE VERY NICE.
AND THANK YOU AGAIN FOR HELPING ME.
I'LL STOP ON MY WAY HOME.
AND I TELL THEM TO GET YOUR CAR.
HE STARTED HIS CAR AND WENT AWAY.
ALL THE WAY HOME.
HE WAS THINKING ABOUT GOLDEN HAIR AND BLUE EYES.
"I MUST SEE HER AGAIN" HE THOUGHT.
HOW CAN I DO IT.
THE NEXT MORNING.
*VICTOR WAS IN HIS SHOP.
ONE OR TWO PERSON CAME IN.
AND THEY BOUGHT SOMETHING.
AND THEN THEY WENT OUT AGAIN.
A LITTLE LATER .
*VICTOR SAW A MAN STANDING OUTSIDE.
AND HE WAS LOOKING AT THE THINGS IN THE WINDOW.
THEN THE MAN LOOKED AT THE FRONT OF THE SHOP.
AND THE HOUSE.
*VICTOR WENT TO THE DOOR AND OPENED IT.
"GOOD-MORNING,MR. ADAMS" HE SAID.
"WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU" HE SAID.
DO YOU WANT TO BUY SOMETHING?.
"GOOD-MORNING,MR. NEWTON" SAID ROBERT-ADAMS.
YES, YOU CAN DO SOMETHING FOR ME .

"I ANSWERED YOUR LETTER,MR. ADAMS".

GOOD-DAY.
HE WENT INSIDE.
AND HE SHUT THE DOOR.
*ROBERT-ADAMS OPENED THE DOOR .
AND HE CAME INTO THE SHOP.
"YES,I GOT YOUR LETTER,MR. NEWTON" HE SAID.
"BUT THERE IS SOMETHING MORE TO SAY".
IF YOU DON'T SELL ME THIS SHOP.
I SHALL BUILD ANOTHER ONE.
MUCH BIGGER.
IT WILL NOT BE FAR AWAY FROM HERE.
PEOPLE WILL COME TO MY SHOP.
BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT PAY MUCH MONEY.
I CAN DO THIS.
BECAUSE I AM MUCH RICHER THAN YOU ARE.
I WILL PAY YOU WELL FOR THIS SHOP.
YOU WILL NOT BE POOR.
THINK ABOUT IT AGAIN,*MRNEWTON.
I DON'T WANT TO WAIT MUCH LONGER.
HE WALKED OUT OF THE SHOP.
JUST THEN.
MRS. NEWTON CAME INTO THE SHOP.
"WHAT WAS HE SAYING?" SHE ASKED.
I HEARD HIM TALKING.
HE TALKED A LOT.
YOU DIDN'T SAY MUCH.
"NO", SAID *VICTOR.
THERE ISN'T MUCH TO SAY.
THIS IS THE END OF *NEWTON'S.
HE WILL BUILD A BIGGER SHOP NEAR HERE.
AND EVERYONE WILL GO THERE.
I CAN NOT SELL ANYTHING.
YOU CAN'T FIGHT AGAINST MONEY.
HE LOOKED SADLY AT HIS SHOP.
*TOM WILL NEVER HAVE IT NOW.
HE WILL NEVER WORK HERE .
OR HIS SON WILL NOT WORK.
*TOM DOESN'T WANT TO WORK HERE.
HE WANTS TO WORK WITH CARS.
YOU KNOW THAT.
HE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THE SHOP.
YOUNG PEOPLE DON'T THINK AS WE DO.
THESE THINGS MATTER TO US VERY MUCH .
LIFE CHANGES ALL THE TIME.
*ROBERT-ADAMS WILL PULL THIS BUILDING DOWN.
THE SHOP AND THE HOUSE.
WE HAVE TO FIND SOMEWHERE ELSE TO LIVE.
"YES" SAID HIS WIFE.
THAT MAKES ME VERY SAD.
THAT IS THE SADDEST PART OF IT ALL.
IT'S A BEAUTIFUL OLD BUILDING.
A NEW BUILDING WILL NOT BE NICE.
"LIFE CHANGES" SAID *VICTOR.
IT CHANGES ALL THE TIME.
HE LOOKED VERY SAD.
HIS WIFE PUT HER ARM THROUGH HIS.
"DON'T BE TOO SAD" SHE SAID.
WE STILL HAVE EACH OTHER.
THAT MATTERS MOST OF ALL.
TOM DID NOT SEE *KAY FOR SOME DAYS.
BUT HE THOUGHT ABOUT HER ALL THE TIME.
HE WANTED TO SEE HER AGAIN .
THEN.
ONE DAY.
HE WAS COMING HOME FROM WORK.
IN HIS CAR.
HE SAW HER WALKING WITH HER DOG.
HE STOPPED AT ONCE.
AND HE GOT OUT.
"I AM GLAD TO SEE YOU AGAIN" HE SAID.
"I WANTED TO CALL YOU ABOUT YOUR CAR".
"YES,THANK YOU" SAID *KAY.
IT GOES VERY WELL NOW.
BUT I DON'T WANT IT TODAY.
BECAUSE I'M TAKING MY DOG FOR A WALK.
WE'RE GOING INTO THE FIELDS.
"MAY I COME WITH YOU?" SAID *TOM.
"YES,IF YOU WANT TO".
*TOM PUT HIS CAR NEAR THE ROAD.
THEN HE AND *KAY WALKED INTO THE FIELDS.
THEY WALKED AND TALKED FOR SOME TIME.
THEY WERE VERY HAPPY.
THE DOG RAN ABOUT.
AND IT WENT INTO THE NEXT FIELD.
THERE WAS A HORSE IN THIS FIELD.
THE DOG RAN AFTER IT.
"OH!" CRIED *KAY.
"MY DOG".
"IT'S RUNNING AFTER THAT HORSE".
SHE BEGAN TO RUN .
"*BIMBO!".
"COME BACK".
"COME HERE AT ONCE".
*TOM RAN ,TOO.
*TOM WAS IN THE OTHER FIELD.
THE DOG WAS MAKING THE HORSE AFRAID.
JUST THEN THE HORSE TURNED.
AND IT LIFTED ITS FOOT TO HIT THE DOG.
*TOM RAN AS FAST AS HE COULD.
HE CAUGHT THE DOG.
AND HE PULLED IT AWAY.
HE MADE A NOISE.
AND THE HORSE RAN OFF .
TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FIELD.
"OH!".
"THANK YOU" SAID *KAY.
THAT HORSE MAY KILL *BIMBO.
"KEEP YOUR DOG AWAY FROM THAT FIELD".
THE HORSE IS ALWAYS THERE .
IT'S AFRAID OF DOGS.
THEY WALKED BACK TO THE ROAD.
AND THEY CAME TO THE CAR.
"I WILL TAKE YOU HOME AGAIN" SAID *TOM.
"BUT FIRST".
"WILL YOU COME HOME WITH ME ".
"AND SEE THE OLD SHOP".
"YOU WANTED TO DO THAT ,DID'T YOU".
"OH! YES" SAID *KAY.
I WILL LIKE THAT.
I'VE NEVER BEEN INSIDE IT.
THEY WENT TO THE SHOP.
AND *TOM TOOK *KAY INSIDE.
"HOW PRETTY IT IS" SHE SAID.
MY FATHER AND MOTHER LOVE THIS HOUSE.
I WANT THEM TO STAY HERE .
" BUT YOU DON'T WANT TO WORK HERE ,DO YOU".
"YOU WANT TO WORK WITH CARS".
"YES" SAID *TOM.
"BUT THAT WILL NOT MATTER ".
MY FATHER IS NOT AN OLD MAN.
HE CAN WORK IN THE SHOP FOR A LONG TIME.
WHEN HE GETS OLDER.
I CAN PAY SOMEONE TO HELP HIM.
HE AND MY MOTHER CAN STILL LIVE IN THE HOUSE.
THE NAME *NEWTON'S WILL STAY.

"YES" SAID *KAY.
"WHERE DID YOU MEET MY SON" SAID *VICTOR.
*KAY TOLD THEM ABOUT THE CAR.
THE WALK IN THE FIELD.
"I SEE " SAID *VICTOR.
HE LOOKED AT *TOM.
SHOW MISS-ADAMS EVERYTHING .
IN THE SHOP AND HOUSE.
IT WILL NOT BE HERE VERY MUCH LONGER.
"WHY DO YOU SAY THAT".
"IT'S GOING TO BE SOLD".
"AND LATER".
" IT'S GOING TO BE PULLED DOWN".
"OH! NO" CRIED *KAY.
" THIS BEATIFUL OLD BUILDING".
WHO IS BUYING IT.
WHO WANTS TO PULL DOWN?.
"YOUR FATHER" SAID *VICTOR.
"MY FATHER " SAID *KAY.
"NO ,IT CAN'T BE TRUE".
"IT IS TRUE" SAID *VICTOR.
HE CAME HERE THE DAY BEFORE YESTERDAY.
HE WANTS TO BUY IT AND PULL IT DOWN.
AND HE WANTS TO BUILD ANOTHER SHOP.
THE OTHER ONE WILL MUCH BIGGER THAN THIS.
HE CAN SELL A LOT OF TINGS IN IT.

YOU MUST TELL MY FATHER THAT.
HE CAN'T MAKE YOU SELL IT.
"NO" SAID *VICTOR.
"HE CAN'T MAKE ME SELL IT.
BUT HE CAN BUILD ANOTHER ONE NEAR IT.
AND EVERYONE WILL GO TO THE BIG NEW SHOP.
I SHALL NOT SELL ANYTHING.
"AND WHERE WILL YOU LIVE" SAID *TOM,ANGRILY.
*VICTOR-NEWTON LAUGHED .
PEOPLE LIKE *ADAMS DON'T CARE THINGS LIKE THAT.
THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT ONE THING.
MAKING MONEY.
"OH! NO" SAID *KAY , UNHAPPILY.
MY FATHER ISN'T LIKE THAT .

AND FOUND HER DOWN IN THE SHOP.
SHE WAS CRYING.
AND HE TOOK HER HAND.
"DON'T CRY,*KAY" HE SAID.

THE LOST RING.
MANY BAD THINGS HAPPEN IN THIS LIFE.
EVERY DAY WE READ IN THE NEWSPAPERS.
SOMETIMES THEY HAPPEN TO US .
THEN WE THINK.
THERE ARE SOME BAD PEOPLE.
THEY ARE DOING BAD THINGS.
THEN WE GET VERY ANGRY.
IF WE ARE ANGRY.
WE ARE UNHAPPY.
IF WE ARE UNHAPPY.
WE MAKE OTHER PEOPLE UNHAPPY.
NOW YOU WILL READ A REAL STORY.
IT HAPPENED TO ME.
I WAS GOING TO STAY WITH A FRIEND .
I WENT LIVERPOOL STATION.
I WANTED TO BUY SOMETHING IN A SHOP.
BIG STATIONS HAVE SHOPS.
I WENT INTO ONE OF THE SHOPS.
AND I BOUGHT TWO BOOKS AND A NEWSPAPER.
THEN I WENT BACK TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STATION.
I SAT IN THE TRAIN.
I STARTED TO READ THE NEWSPAPER.
JUST THEN, I LOOKED AT MY HAND.
MY GOLD RING WAS NOT THERE.
IT MADE SAD ME VERY MUCH TO LOSE THE RING .
THIS RING WAS GIVEN TO ME BY A DEAR FRIEND.
I LOOKED ON THE FLOOR OF THE TRAIN.
THEN I LOOKED IN MY COAT AND MY HANDBAG.
"WHAT SHALL I DO" I THOUGHT.
DID I HAVE IT IN THE SHOP.
I HAVE LOST IT.
HOW CAN I GET IT.
I CAN'T GO BACK TO THE SHOP.
IF I DO.
THE TRAIN WILL GO WITHOUT ME.
MY FRIEND WILL MEET THE TRAIN.
I WENT TO THE WINDOW OF THE TRAIN.
AND I LOOKED OUT.
A MAN WAS PUTTING SOME BAGS.
I GOT OUT OF THE TRAIN.
AND I LOOKED ON THE GROUND.
BUT THE RING WAS NOT THERE.
THE MAN SAW ME .
AND HE CAME UP TO ME.
"HAVE YOU LOST SOMETHING" HE SAID.
"YES" I SAID.
I'VE LOST MY RING.
IT'S NOT HERE.
I'VE LOOKED AT EVERYWHERE.
I WAS IN THE SHOP ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STATION.
IT MUST BE THERE.
BUT I CAN'T GO BACK TO LOOK FOR IT.
THE TRAIN WILL GO NOW .
"I'LL GO TO THE SHOP FOR YOU" THE MAN SAID .
IF THE RING IS THERE.
I'LL BRING IT TO YOU.
"IT'S VERY KIND OF YOU" I SAID.
BUT YOU HAVE NOT TIME.
"THE TRAIN GOES VERY SOON NOW".
I THOUGHT QUICKLY.
IF YOU FIND THE RING.
WILL YOU TELEPHONE TO ME.
"YES" HE ANSWERED.
I'LL TELEPHONE YOU.
HE WROTE THE ADDRESS ON A PIECE OF PAPER.
"WHAT IS YOUR NAME" I ASKED.
"MY NAME IS HAWKINS" HE SAID.
CAN I FIND YOU AGAIN ON THIS STATION.
WHEN I COME BACK TO LONDON.
"YES" THE MAN SAID.
"I WORK ON THE TRAINS".
"JUST ASK FOR HAWKINS".
"IF YOU FIND THE RING".
PLEASE TAKE CARE OF IT.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW .
IF YOU FIND IT.
PEOPLE WERE GETTING INTO THE TRAIN QUICKLY.
AND THEY WERE SHUTTING THE DOORS.
I GOT INTO THE TRAIN ,TOO.
THEN I PUT MY HEAD OUT OF THE WINDOW.
YOU WILL REMEMBER TO TELEPHONE.
"I'LL REMEMBER " HAWKINS ANSWERED.
THE TRAIN BEGAN TO MOVE.
"THANK YOU VERY MUCH, MR.HAWKINS".
I CALLED OUT TO HIM.
THE TRAIN WENT OUT OF THE STATION.
AND I SAT DOWN.
AND I THOUGHT ABOUT MY RING.
IT MADE ME VERY SAD .
"I SHALL NEVER SEE IT AGAIN" I THOUGHT.
IF THAT MAN HAWKINS FINDS IT.
HE CAN TAKE IT TO A SHOP.
AND HE SELL IT FOR A LOT OF MONEY.
I SHALL NEVER HEAR ANYTHING ABOUT MY RING.
I WAS VERY SAD.
I DID NOT WANT TO GO AWAY.
I WANTED TO GO BACK TO THE STATION.
AND I WANTED TO LOOK FOR MY RING.
BUT THE TRAIN WENT FASTER AND FASTER.
ABOUT AN HOUR LATER.
THE TRAIN STOPPED.
AND I GOT OUT.
MY FRIEND WAS THERE WITH HER CAR.
WE WENT TO HER HOUSE.
I TOLD HER MY SAD STORY.
AND SHE WAS VERY SORRY.
WE GOT TO THE HOUSE.
AND MY FRIEND WENT TO PUT THE CAR .
I TOOK OFF MY COAT.
AND I PUT MY BAG IN MY ROOM.
JUST THEN,I HEARD THE TELEPHONE.
I ANSWERED IT.
AND A MAN SPOKE.
"THIS IS HAWKINS SPEAKING" HE SAID.
"OH! MR. HAWKINS " I SAID.
"HAVE YOU FOUND MY RING".
"YES" HE SAID.
"IT'S ALL RIGHT".
I'VE FOUND IT.
YOU LEFT IT IN THAT SHOP.
SOMEONE FOUND IT .
AND HE GAVE TO THE WOMAN IN THE SHOP.
I ASKED HER ABOUT THE RING.
AND SHE SHOWED TO ME.
IT MUST BE YOUR RING.
"I'M PLEASED" I SAID.
"THANK YOU VERY MUCH".
"I'LL GET IT FROM YOU LATER".
WHY WILL YOU WAIT SO LONG.
I CAN SEND IT TO YOU.
WHERE SHALL I SEND.
BUT THAT'S A LOT OF TROUBLE FOR YOU.
"NO TROUBLE AT ALL" HAWKINS SAID.
I'M PLEASED .
I GAVE HIM MY NAME .
"I'LL SEND IT TOMORROW" HE SAID.
THEN HE WENT AWAY.
TWO DAYS LATER.
A LETTER CAME FOR ME.
MY RING WAS IN THE LETTER.
I SENT HAWKINS SOME MONEY .
AND A LETTER OF THANKS.
BUT I COULD NOT THANK THE PEOPLE .
WHO FOUND THE RING.
I SHALL NEVER KNOW THEIR NAMES.
THEY WERE NOT RICH PEOPLE.
THEY WERE GOOD PEOPLE.
THE POOR FISHERMAN.
Once there was a man and his wife.
They had no house.
They lived in the fields.
And they slept at the foot of a tree.
The man caught fish.
He was a fisherman.
The man was happy.
He said " why do men live in houses".
"This tree is my house".
"We have no house".
"We have no bed".
The fields are my bed.
But his wife was not happy.
She said "why did I marry a poor fisherman".
We have no house.
We have no bed.
One day .
The fisherman went to the sea to catch the fish.
He put his net to the water.
Then he sat on a stone.
The sun was hot.
And he fell asleep.
When he awoke
He took his net.
There was one fish in the net.
It was large and golden.
"a beatiful fish".
He was very happy
He said"my wife will be glad".
"When she sees this beatiful fish".
Then the fish spoke.
He said "good man ".
Do not kill me.
Put me back to the sea.
The fisherman said "Can you speak?".
I didn't see a fish that could speak.
The fish said " Good Man".
"Put me back to the sea".
"I do not eat a fish that can speak".
Then he threw the fish into the sea.
The fisherman went back to his wife that night.
He had no fish.
So they had no food.
He said to his wife.
" I caught one fish".
But the fish spoke.
So I threw him back into the water.
I can not kill a fish .
Because it can speak.
The Fisherman's wife said.
It is a wizard.
It was not a fish.
But some wizard can become a fish.
The fisherman said.
"I do not know".
"if it was a wizard".
"The fish did not tell" said the fisherman.
The fisherman's wife said.
"Did you ask him for anything".
"I did not ask him for anything" said the man.
"Why do we live in the fields".
"You must want a hut".
next day.
the fisherman went back to the sea.
He stood on the stone .
and he called.
"Man of the sea".
"Come to me".
Then the fish put his head out of the water.
and it asked.
"What do you want?".
The fisherman said"I do not want anything".
But my wife wants to live in a hut.
"Go back to your wife " said the fish.
You will find her in a hut.
The fisherman went back to his tree.
He saw a hut.
It was a new hut.
It was very pretty hut.
It had two pretty windows and.
It had one blue door.
There was a pretty garden at the back.
There was pretty flowers.
There were hens.
He went into the hut.
There was one room.
The sunlight was coming in through the window.
And the room was full of light.
His wife was sitting at the table.
"You must be happy now" said the fisherman.
"It is a pretty hut" said his wife.
For some days
The fisherman's wife was happy.
The fisherman came home one night.
His wife said to him.
"I am not happy in this little hut".
The hens run in my room.
We must live in a good house.
Go now to the fish.
Want a house.
The fisherman went to the sea.
He stood on the stone.
and he called.
"Man of the Sea".
"Come to me".
The fish put his head out of the water.
and it asked.
"What do you want".
The fisherman said "I do not want anything".
"but my wife wants a house".
"Go back to your wife" said the fish.
"You will find her in a house".
The fisherman went back to his hut.
He saw a house.
It was a very pretty house.
The house was made of stone.
There were roses at the side of the door.
There was a pretty garden.
The house had two doors.
There were six windows at the front.
There were six windows at the back.
The fisherman found his wife inside the house.
He said " you have a beatiful house".
"and you must be happy" .
She said "The outside of the house is pretty".
But the rooms are not very large.
For some days
The fisherman's wife was happy.
Then she said .
"We live in a pretty house".
But you are fisherman.
and I am a fisherman's wife.
No one comes to see us.
No one speaks to me in the street.
"What do you want?" asked the fisherman.
"I want you to be a king".
then I shall be a queen.
We shall live in a big house.
We shall get what we want.
The rooms will be full of servants.
They will do what we ask.
The fisherman said "I do not want to be a king".
I want to be a fisherman .
and I want to live in the fields.
"But I want to be a queen" said his wife.
The fisherman went to the sea.
He stood on a stone and said.
"Man of the Sea".
"Come to me".
Then the fish put his head out of the water and said.
"what do you want now".
The fisherman said "I do not want anything".
"But my wife wants you to make her a queen".
The fish said "I will make her a queen".
"Go back".
"You will find her a queen".
The fisherman went back
He found a big house.
there were servants at the door.
Two servants took him ito a large room.
his wife was sitting there.
She had the clothes of a queen.
"you must be happy now" said the fisherman.
"You are a queen".
"You have this big house".
"You have a lot of servants".
For some days she was happy.
there was sunlight.
She went into the garden.
And the servants are in red coats.
Then the rain came.
It rained for many days.
and there was no sunlight.
She could not go into the garden.
Then the fisherman's wife said.
"I am a queen".
"I do not want this rain".
"I want the sun".
She said to the fisherman.
"Go and ask the fish to make me Queen of the Sun".
The fisherman went to the sea.
He stood on the stone and said.
"Man of the Sea,come to me".
Then the fish put his head out of the water and said.
"What do you want now?".
"SPEAK".
The fisherman said "My wife wants you to make her Queen of the Sun".
The fish said "Your wife will not be happy".
"You will go back to the fields".
"and You will sleep at the foot of a tree".
The fisherman went back .
The big house and the garden were not there.
His wife was sitting at the foot of a tree.
There was no rain.
There was sunlight.
There were flowers in the fields.
She said "It is good to be away from all servants".
"Look at the sun shining in the sky".
"I am happy now".

Balance Of The World
Nasreddin Hodja
Someone asked:
“Hodja Effendi, why do people go to different directions, when they leave their houses in the morning?”
The Hodja answered without hesitation:
“If all of them would go to the same direction, this would throw off the balance of the world!”

A Forty Year Old Wine
Nasreddin Hodja
One day, a neighbor said to the Hodja:
Have you a wine that is forty years old?
Yes I have, replied the Hodja.
Can you give me a little, asked the neighbor.
“If I gave a little to everybody asking for it”, said the Hodja, “It would not be forty years old!”
_Beautiful Horse
Nasreddin Hodja
One day, when Temur was going hunting he wanted the Hodja to join him. In front of the palace, where the hunting started, they gave him an old, tired horse.
During the hunting suddenly it began to rain. Everybody put their horses to the gallop and ran away. But the Hodja couldn't... As the weather was hot he took off his clothes and put them under him. And so he returned slowly to the palace. When the rain was over he put on his clothes again.
When he arrived at the palace, his clothes were dry and Temur was most astonished.
“We all got wet”, he said. “How is it, that you are still dry?”
“Oh, Sir”, the Hodja replied. “With the help of this horse, I arrived at the palace without getting wet.”
Another hunting trip Temur wanted the horse which was given to the Hodja before. By a great coincidence it again began to rain and Temur got wet. When he came back to the palace he angrily called the Hodja and asked what it meant.
“Oh Sir,”, the Hodja said. “I am very sorry. I forgot to tell you, that you also had to put your clothes under you and then you would not get wet.”

One day, people said to the Hodja:
“Your wife walks from house to house, tell her she mustn't walk so much,”. “Alright”, said the Hodja. “If she comes to our house, I'll tell her.”
